Summary: Space search update, rental manager wanted,
elections upcoming, rentals upcoming, and more!
REPORTS
Managing Director - John Mitchell
We looked at a space but don’t know yet if we will
move to it. We’re “exploring options.” It’s on Wilshire and Carondolet, where the La Fonda
restaurant. There is parking and street parking at night. The area seems safe. It’s close to MacArthur
Park, but not worse than where we are now. The building owners, John thinks, might not be able to
live up to promises. The building is great but we may need to make modifications, and John Mitchell is
concerned that it may be a historic building. There is not enough power right now. We would need to
install a lighting system and a grid. The stage space is smaller.
Adam: So basically, we’d be moving to be in a better neighborhood, but nothing else?
John: We would have signage and a marquis on Wilshire Blvd, but our production values might be compromised.
There is a full time dedicated rehearsal space.
Adam: Have you thrown out a number?
John: Yes, theirs was too high, and they went for our counter offer. Over the course of a year or two, the
figure would go up.
Paul: The owners envision this being a facility we share with another theater company. There’s a
downstairs space that used to be a movie theater. This would be shared, as well as office space. This
space came to us through Jonathan Tavvs, who is working really hard for us. He also has a real estate
developer working with us, so there are other options we are looking at.
By the way, we are putting together a new business model for the space we have now that includes more
rentals during the day for this space. We are interested in paying a staff member to be here to
facilitate rentals. It won’t be a lot, maybe $50 a day.
Adam: The Space has casting directors in sometimes, so maybe we should talk to them. Casting directors
might be looking for space to use for auditions.
Lou: Some of my regular clients in the handyman business are casting directors, so I can pass the word
onto them.
Becky has a question about a local shop that wants monthly parking in our lot. John is opposed to this,
but Brandon thinks it might work. They’re going to discuss it later. There is a brief discussion about
parking and building relationships with our neighbors. There is a photographer nearby who wants to do work
with us.
Brandon says the Salon is much more cooperative now that they’ve gotten an ABC fine for $4K.
Artistic Directors - Padraic Duffy
Nada. July 1st deadline for mainstage. January-June 2006 programming. Accepting all submissions.
Mem Com
We need three candidates!! July elections.
Operations - Brandon Clark
Houses and beer consumption not up to last years but we’re barreling through.
Technical Director (s) - Becky Harrison for Kate Morrison
Rentals: she’s meeting with a woman from the Town Street Theater on Monday. They’re doing a summer
workshop for children in musical theater. They want a three week rental. The space will have 30 children in
it. Goose & Tom Tom set will not be a problem. This helps our outreach and all that good stuff. They are
writing a letter for our programs.
I have a question about insurance and kids. Becky says Town St. is covering it. Rental is during the
day. We do not need anyone here.
PRODUCERS
Ivona
Last night small house but otherwise, average 20-30 people. There are 27 on the books for tonight. Some
of the lights were knocked around and a cue was written over. The cue was not discovered until a bad
point during the middle of the show (bright white lights during a dark moment on stage—oops!) Please
don’t program the board! Also, other shows, please be careful of the panels!!
Adam: Did you think of putting them away?
Becky: It’s complicated.
Adam: When we do these pay what you can performances, do we pay any attention to making enough money to pay
actors and stage managers for performance.
Jenine: Most people pay full price or $10.
Tom: Does pay what you can make people not come on other nights?
John: I don’t have evidence of that.
Brandon: Sunday nights are traditionally light, so pay what you can just helps Sunday?
Julie: Are we pushing pay what you can in theater departments?
Brandon: We’re pushing it for Goose & Tom Tom.
Phil is a little peeved that he didn’t know about pay what you can for Goose & Tom Tom. Should I notify the
media? Yes is the answer.
Triple Crown - Tom Kiesche
Week II was great. Week III will be the same, we hope. Tom is learning a lot about performance from
watching audience reactions.
