On this dark, cold and possibly the wettest of meetings in 2004 many things were discussed, many votes were counted, and many positions changed hands. Oh meeting of December 5th, you shall long be remembered by those of us that attended. Unofficially, thirty-six people, attended. Twenty-three were company members at the start of the meeting, and thirty-one company members by the end of it. An interesting tidbit of information: There were two completely new to Sacred Fools people. One came after reading a Backstage Article. And another came from a posting on Craigslist. So, my advice, keep talking about our company… And keep inviting people to join in.

The long held SAA position changed hands from the always prize giving Andy Wolf to the always loving Julie Mullen. While Ruth Silveria graciously bowed out of the membership department, Kathi Copeland was gloriously voted in. Ruth Silveria narrowly overtook the literary position, and the next AC for Sacred Fools was announced. And as was earlier mentioned, eight new members of Sacred Fools were voted in. So, please welcome Sacred Fools' newest members: Anthony Backman, Jenelle Riley, Tenya Cleveland, Julie Mullen, Hans Gelpke, Becky Harrison, Josh Petroski and John Mitchell. Also joining us at Sacred Fools are several beautiful brand new lighting instruments, secured by a new member to our tech team, Jason Mullen, and donated by ETC.

Julie Mullen, Kathi Copeland, Ruth Silveria all ran unopposed for their positions. But the candidates for AC included: Jenelle Riley, CM Gonzalez, Joe Jordan, Padraic Duffy and David LM Mcintyre.

Discussions by Candidates, Questions and Answers, and anything discussed during new member voting will be left out of these minutes. With only one exception: When David and Padraic, the two current AC members, were asked what they would do differently or what they learned… Both replied with similar answers… Both didn’t realize how quickly they had to get programming going… The reason included this in these notes, is for our future AC’s to possibly learn from.

ELECTIONS

Nominations:

SAA – Julie Mullen nominated

LITERARY MANAGER – Ruth Silviera

MEMCOM – Kathi Copeland

AC – Padraic, CM, Jordan, Mcintyre, Jenelle Riley

AC Question and Answer Period

Jenelle – been around past year.  All or nothing gal.  Want to commit fully.  Frustrations I have experienced want to help solve.  Good listener.  Love theater in general.  Dubya, not her cup of tea, but love what it did for the theater.

Jessie – what do you mean by member shows

Jenelle – try to utilize as many company members as possible.  Try and make some hard evidence of benefits to membership

Kiesche – Picking shows that advance you personally or for the company.

Jenelle – I will not be proposing anything if elected.  I see it as a conflict of interest.

CM – No personal advancement.  It is shows that people want to come see that excite me.  I want the company to be behind the project.

Duffy - Tough to rank all the qualifications we go through picking a show.  Not against proposing my own show.  Unless it is not ready to mount etc… trust the AC to make good decisions.

Mcintyre – (Minute taker closed file by accident momentarily and missed this portion)

Joe – If something excites me I will propose it.  Want to know what the company likes.  If there is strong company support for a show that will hold more weight.  In past, sometimes proposal were not ready to mount.  Very complex to make decisions.

John Mitchell – how do you feel about programming an entire season? And what is your vision?

Joe – I like it, but my experience is I would want to work on 1/2 a year season rather than a year long season.  Year long brings difficulties.  Not everyone is ready to propose.  It’s a timing thing.  Vision – capitalize on being live theater.  Unlike what you will see anywhere else.  It’s live.  Viscerally entertaining.

Mcintyre – I don’t believe the structure of the company is ready for a season.  Vision – I’m proud of the theatricality.  Optimize the live event.  More new works and new voices.  Continuing to search for new and contemporary works.

Duffy – trepidation, but could be a good thing.  We could definitely set a 6 month season.  Packaging projects and not wait for proposals.  Vision - Set the seeds for artists.  Reason we are here is to do challenging work.

CM – tricky to schedule in advance.  Vision – more stuff done/created by the company.  I want to give people amazing things.

Jenelle – not against programming as far as possible.  Leave some slots open to plan as we get closer late/dark projects.

Brandon Clark – Do finances enter into decisions?

Duffy – not for one show cuz we never really pick one at a time.  Balance when looking at the grand scheme.

Joe – absolutely a consideration

Mike lanahan – example of one play in the past 2 years that exemplifies your vision.

Jenelle – Don Juan

Joe – Uncle tom’s cabin

Duffy – Underneath the lintel.  Beautiful and simple to do.  Crazy and challenging but keep the heart there.

Mcintyre – cirque picnique

CM – Peer Gynt.  Epic.  Felt like a large story.  Impressed we were able to do so much.

Kathi – what would you do differently than last year?  David/Duffy….and what do you think were your greatest strengths and weaknesses.

Mcintyre – didn’t realize how fast I needed to get going.  We took a while before we started to put pressure on ourselves.  I know already that I need to have projects ready to start ASAP.  Strength – proud of the choices we made.  Weaknesses – pushing toward getting things set earlier.

Duffy – strength – still constantly involved in our work.  Met at least once a week.  Always looking at things and being fully engaged.  Weaknesses – several times we had to announce something and then take it back.  Making sure things are set.

Set to vote!

Julie Mullen new SAA
