EVOLVING JUSTICE: The Truth About Representation
April 11 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
We’ve all heard the phrase “representation matters”, but what does that actually mean. In our application, conventional wisdom posits that performances should reflect the community they take place in and that people want to see themselves and their cultures portrayed in a positive light. Nothing wrong with the sentiments here, but like many traditional measures this answer only treats the symptoms and not the source of the problem. Moreover, “checking boxes” is very problematic and often harms the very people we mean to uplift, and the desire to pander has led to many troublesome character tropes like the “magical mystical negro”. There is a growing mountain of evidence that while we have correctly verified the existence of a problem, we have misidentified the source and nature of said problem. During this discussion, the panelists will share their experiences and dig deeper to reveal the truth behind representation. This will be followed by a brief question and answer with our viewers.
