Character Breakdown (7 Men, 1 Woman)

Phineas Gage (25-37): A railroad worker who survived of an accident in which a large iron rod was driven completely through his head, destroying much of his brain's left frontal lobe. Phineas, post-accident, vacillates between childish wonderment and animal-like aggression. A controlled environment helps to stabilize and heal him.

Dr. John Martyn Harlow (29-49): The physician who initially treats and saves Phineas and compiles the research and study of Phineas's life. Humble and inquisitive. Central narrator.

Dr. Henry Jacob Bigelow (30-50): Professor of Surgery at Harvard University. A dominating figure in Boston medicine for many decades. Very well educated and traveled. He knows that he is the authority on medical matters. Blinded by his own self-importance.

Elizabeth Hunt (18-38): A headstrong medical student. Uncomfortable in her station and yearns to make more of her life. Corresponds with Harlow about Phineas via letters. (Also plays Mrs. Abigail Freeman, Grace and The Young Woman.)

Dr. Bartholomew Billings (late 30s to late 50s): Professor of English at Harvard University. Logophile. Gregarious and good natured. Inflated self worth. (Also plays Joseph Adams and The Foreman.) This role is already cast.

Dr. Robert Hightower (late 30s to late 50s): Professor of Ethics at Harvard University. Dry. Stick in the mud. Elevated sense of self worth. Enjoys linguistic battles. (Also plays Charlie and The Italian Dockworker.)

Dr. Quincey Adams (60s): Professor of Internal Medicine at Harvard University. The curmudgeon. Slightly deaf. Surprising voice of reason. (Also plays The Barker.)

Seamus Barry (20): Irish Theology student studying in America. Earnest yet naive. (Also plays Dr. Edward Williams, The Digger and The Spanish Dockworker.)
