CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
· Ivan Voynitsky, “Vanya”: 47 years old, never married. Lives on a large estate purchased by his father for a beloved sister, now deceased. Manages this estate; supports and provides for - in various important ways everyone else in the story.
· Dr. Mikhail Lvovich Astrov: 47 years old, Vanya’s best friend, also never married. Owns a small neighboring estate. Practices medicine in the countryside and is an impassioned advocate for the environment. Paints and draws images which are a record of their world.
· Professor Serebriakov: the husband of Vanya’s deceased sister.
· Yelena: the Professor’s second wife. She is 27, ravishing, a musician trained at the Conservatory (perhaps a singer). This is her first marriage. She and Vanya have known each other a long time; a decade ago, there was a chance they might have married.
· Sonia: the Professor’s daughter; Yelena’s stepdaughter; Vanya’s niece. Passionately in love with Atrov for over 6 years. Lives on the estate and works hard. A woman of Grace.
· Nanny: an older member of the household who was once somebody’s nanny.
· Maria Vassilyevna: Vanya’s mother; the Professor’s doting mother-in-law from the first marriage; Sonia’s grandmother. A genteel, rigorous intellectual, a philosopher with her head in the clouds.
· Telegin, “Waffles”: a neighbor and intimate of the household; Sonia’s godfather. An abandoned husband of indeterminate age. Plays the guitar.
· A Laborer: A night watchman (offstage).
