Mission

Mission Statement

The Sacred Fools Theater Company is an organization committed to create, sustain and nurture live theatre in Los Angeles. In the evolving reality of the theater of today, we are continually searching for new and inspiring artists to partner with and foster. While our specific focus is on work that is intrinsically theatrical, we also strive to create opportunities for both established peers and emerging artists, especially from historically under-represented backgrounds. We seek to be a theatrical hub, providing and sharing our resources to create a community of communities.

Short History

We are one of the only 100% democratically-lead theater companies in Los Angeles, and our members pay no dues to remain a member. We believe theater is a collective art between the artists and the audience, and, as such, we are always seeking ways to reach out and bring theater to underserved populations.

In the spring of 1997, veteran stage actor John Sylvain and a handful of fellow artists created Sacred Fools Theater Company, a new theater company in which members would support each other's work and foster a safe environment where artists could take risks. Over 100 mainstage productions, earning over 160 nominations and 100 awards, were to come. In addition to its successful mainstage productions, Sacred Fools has also been committed to developing new work and being an active participant in our community through a variety of free and low-cost offerings, including off-night workshops, productions, and educational opportunities. In 2016, Sacred Fools moved to its new theater space on Hollywood's Theatre Row. With help from generous donors and lots and lots of volunteers, we now operate four spaces, and not only still produce a full season of our own MainStage productions, but also serve as a popular and necessary rental house for independent productions in the Los Angeles theater community. Our staff includes a Managing Director, Technical Director, Development Director and an Artistic Team of three company members. Our company members organize and run our education and outreach arms, our marketing, box office, events, and facilities committees, and keep the Foolish community running smoothly.
