CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

All characters except Hester speak with a standard British dialect.

Mrs. Arbuthnot - A respectable widow in her early 40s (40-45) and mother to Gerald; has a secret past.

Lord Illingworth - A dandy in his mid forties (40-45); handsome, witty, a professional flirt, comes from money; father to Gerald, though he is not aware of this in the beginning.

Gerald Arbuthnot - The 19-year-old illegitimate son of Mrs. Arbuthnot and Lord Illingworth. Young, handsome, ideal, believes in honor and duty; in love with Miss Hester Worsley.

Lady Hunstanton - A typical Victorian aristocrat in her late 40s or early 50s (40-50), well meaning but ignorant, and the host of the party.

Lady Caroline Pontefract - A bully in her late 60s or early 70s (60-70); can say one thing in front of a person and the opposite behind that person’s back. She controls and strong-arms her husband, Sir John Ponterfract.

Sir John Pontefract - A quiet, elderly, resigned man in his 70s (65-75); husband to Lady Caroline, who controls their marriage.

Mr. Kelvil, M.P. - A stuffy and progressive moralist in his 50s (50-60); although he earnestly wishes to improve society, he lacks the charm and charisma needed to do so. He also seems to avoid his family as much as he can.

Lady Stutfield - in her 30s (27-37). Comes off as intellectually restricted, but may have ulterior motives - such a desperate need of attention from men.

Mrs. Allonby - (35-45) A coquette who has a bit of a reputation for controversy; the female dandy of the play. She is not the stereotypical female character, and exchanges witty repartee with Lord Illingworth.

Miss Hester Worsley - 18. An American puritan and an outsider to the British society in the play, Hester is both an orphan and an heiress, and is in love with Gerald. Standard-American accent - proper.

Footman - 40-60 years old, well groomed and has been in his trade for decades.
