ABOUT THE SHOW:

MIRAVEL is a play with music about a love triangle that tracks three people through their adult lives.

Alphonso Bloch is a reclusive composer who falls in love with Miravel. He composes for her, but they don't get together. Henry, a singer, his best friend, falls for her too. She is attracted to Henry - but perhaps her deeper love lies elsewhere? Alphonso makes a fateful decision - to give his music to Henry, to woo her with.

With a mix of original music by Alphonso Bloch and some standards, MIRAVEL is a jazz musical where the songs are the characters.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

* For Alphonso Bloch (seeking understudy only) - 16 Bars of a classic or modern Jazz piece that shows off your vocal maturity and range; you will accompany yourself on piano. Please bring any additional musical instruments you would like to use to showcase your ability, and come prepared with a one-minute dramatic monologue of your choosing.

* For Henry Brooks - 16 Bars of a classic or modern Jazz piece that shows off your vocal maturity and range, as well as a verse of your favorite hip hop song. Accompanist provided. Please come prepared with a one-minute dramatic monologue of your choosing.

* For Miravel - Although Miravel is not a singer, she still ‘sings’. Please come prepared with something that will inform us of what your voice sounds like. This could be zip a de do da, you could sing acapella or with the provided accompanist; we would like to hear what you sound like keeping in mind that Miravel is not a singer. Please come prepared with a one-minute dramatic monologue of your choosing.

* Dance call will be at callbacks and not at the initial audition; all characters must have dance/movement skill. Please be ready to work your monologues.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

Please contact the production team via the audition EMail if you would like the read the script.

ALPHONSO BLOCH (understudy only), Age 25-45
. An American Composer, Early 21st Century. Started with Jazz. Instruments: piano (high level) and guitar (low level). His works are played all over the world, and he is known for his fusion of classical and jazz idioms, fusing post bop with a symphonic size. A gentle, quiet man, he was always fairly isolated, and lived through his music, to the detriment of developing personal relationships. He has a smashed up leg and walks with a cane. He also is fairly certain that he is unattractive to women, and doesn't engage with that part of life at all, except in his music. All ethnicities encouraged to submit.

HENRY BROOKS , Age 25-45. An American Singer. Must be a strong jazz singer; crooning, scat, and singing horn lines in jazz arrangements. He was a childhood prodigy in Jazz, having a residency at the Caskers Jazz Club while still in school, and his concerts were broadcast on the radio. He peaked a little early, and his personal issues got in front of his career. His main characteristics are physical beauty and self loathing. He is confrontational as a default position, and treats women badly, because they always came easy and his self esteem is truly low, although covered with a superior and sometimes cruel exterior. He is, however, an exceptional singer, and can transport an audience with a song. All ethnicities encouraged to submit.

MIRAVEL, Age 25-45. She is the rarest of women. A muse. She set out to be a dancer, but her sensibilities are so refined that she inspires others with her very presence. She is aware of this, and isn't vain or grasping about it. A non singer who does sing in the show. She is elegant and restrained, emotionally very sensitive and comes off as rather old fashioned. She is humble and delicate, yet strong in her profound convictions about love and music. All ethnicities encouraged to submit.
