ABOUT THE SHOW: WEST COAST PREMIERE! In rural Tennessee, 1961, protesting is a privilege with unintended consequences. In rural Tennessee at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, two young African-American couples struggle to understand justice, love, and their own responsibilities. TOO HEAVY FOR YOUR POCKET beautifully explores the sacrifices and tolls in the fight for freedom and equality that are placed, not only on the fighters, but the people they love. The play had its World Premiere at the Alliance Theater in Atlanta before moving to the Roundabout Theater in New York and won the 2017 Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition.
BOWZIE (Bo-Zee) BRANDON* - male, African American, early 20s. A scrawny kind of man. An entertainer at heart. Loves to play the fool though its often a cover for his deep intelligence and vulnerability. Torn between his responsibility to family and what he begins to realize is his greater responsibility as a citizen.
EVELYN BRANDON* - female, African American, early 20s. Married to Bowzie. A beautiful woman with a hearty figure, curvy and attractive. A singer who relishes performing. A worldly woman, she was independent and thriving before she married. She possesses a wonderful sense of humor but suffers no fools. At turns incredibly stubborn and also deeply sensitive.
TONY CARTER* - male, African American, early 20s. A handyman employed week to week. Bowzie's bosom-buddy since childhood, who is maybe twice his size, three shades darker, and all muscle. Bowzie is the brains and Tony is the brawn. Earthy and hefty with a great sense of humor. Has been prone to gambling and infidelity in the past but is actively trying to turn his life around.
SALLY CARTER* - female, African American, early 20s. A beautician, married to Tony. So slight, one might almost not realize she is pregnant. Grounded and mature she possesses a quiet strength. A gentle powerhouse. Rational and diplomatic, she often plays the mediator in the group. The other three characters take up a lot of space but when she talks, everyone listens. A deep well with emotional availability.
For Tony OR Bowzie: Please prepare the Tony/Bowzie AND the Male monologue.
For Sally: Please prepare the Sally/Evelyn scene AND the Female monologue
For Evelyn: Please prepare the Sally/Evelyn scene, the Female monologue AND 16 bars of a blues or gospel song (a cappella).
*Please note, due to the time constraints of the initial audition process, it is possible that some sides listed above may not be read until callbacks. This show will require its cast to be off-book fairly early to accommodate an accelerated, time-efficient rehearsal process.
PLEASE BRING A HEADSHOT & RESUME AND ARRIVE 15 MINUTES EARLY TO COMPLETE OUR AUDITION FORM.
