SUMMARY: Cowboy is attacked by Selena, who wants to know what he's carrying and guarding in his bag. He claims it's just a book for birdwatchers, but she's not buying it. She seems to somehow be shooting at him with her fingers, but when he gets a bullet in the foot and she yells in frustration, we learn that the bullets were actually fired by Clem, a not-so-sharp sharpshooter who was hiding nearby. Selena takes the book, which is filled with inscrutable markings. Frustrated with Clem's slowness, mistakes and violent outbursts, Selena slits his throat - and then she tells Cowboy that she's in charge, and he's going to translate the book for her and act as her guide. Or else.

SUMMARY: Selena has cut off one of the Cowboy's fingers to entice his cooperation. However, Selena's rival, Xena, shows up, also looking to find the Cowboy's secrets. Selena accuses Xena of copying her, right down to having a dumb sidekick - Clem's equally dim brother Lem. The Cowboy tells the pair that the only way to read his book is to spill blood on it - so Xena kills Lem, and has a vision of skullduggery in Roman times. But the Cowboy says the story of the treasure he's seeking goes back much farther than that...
